Puccini’s passionate love story La Rondine returns to the Met for the first time in more than a decade in Nicolas Joël’s Art Deco–inspired staging, which transports audiences from the heart of 1920s Parisian nightlife to a dreamy vision of the French Riviera.

Following her “mesmerizing” (Financial Times) performance as Micaëla in Bizet’s Carmen earlier this season, soprano Angel Blue stars as the French courtesan Magda in Puccini’s glittering love story, alongside tenor Jonathan Tetelman in his highly anticipated company debut as Ruggero. Also in their Met debuts, soprano Emily Pogorelc and tenor Bekhzod Davronov complete the principal cast as Lisette and Prunier, with Speranza Scappucci on the podium to lead a score that combines the charm of Viennese operetta with the romance and heartbreak of Italian classics like La Bohème and La Traviata.

La Rondine’s score is sophisticated and engrossing, flowing with the sort of melody that could only come from Puccini, including the dreamy dance sequences in Act II and the ensemble in the same scene, “Bevo al tuo fresco sorriso,” as well as the opera’s most famous aria, Act I’s “Chi il bel sogno di Doretta.”

La Rondine was first performed at the Met on March 10, 1928. The opera has only been performed a total of 33 times on the Met stage prior to this season and was last performed in 2013.
