Ages 9–12 | Young Artists Clay + Sculpture | Session 2

In this clay exploration for the creative preteen, projects range from hand-built functional pottery to ceramic sculpture inspired by famous artists. Lessons focus on popular and historic artists, sculptors, ceramicists, and cultural icons. Visits to the Museum of Art lead the way for projects through this six-week class. Materials provided.

Saturdays, 9–11:30 a.m.

5 classes   |   12.5 contact hours   |   Location: Sculpture Studios, 1209 State St. (Enter from main parking lot, go downstairs)

+ IMPORTANT: To ensure the age appropriateness of the curriculum, children must meet the age requirement listed with each course description by the beginning of class.

+ SNACK Please provide a snack/water for your child every day. There will be a supervised snack break each day at mid-morning.

+ SMOCKS: The projects are fun but can be messy at times. Bring a smock (old shirt or apron) or simply dress for the mess.

Meet your instructor, Kyle Pumilio!

Kyle is a dedicated art educator with a passion for ceramics, creativity, and helping students discover their artistic potential. He holds a Master of Science in Education in Educational Technology from SUNY Oneonta and a Bachelor of Arts in Art Education from SUNY Potsdam. He also studied Art Education at Pratt Institute at MWPI in Utica.

A New York State Permanent K–12 Art Teacher, Kyle brings extensive experience in ceramics, including hand building, wheel throwing, ceramic sculpture, glazing, and kiln firing. His teaching approach emphasizes individualized support, positive encouragement, creativity, and a welcoming studio environment where students feel comfortable exploring new ideas and techniques.

Kyle has been actively involved in regional art exhibitions and community arts initiatives, including student art exhibitions, community art shows, and the Pratt 10-Year Anniversary Alumni Exhibition. His dedication to teaching was recognized with the Observer-Dispatch Amazing Teacher Award in 2019, along with the Mark Lomedico Achievement Award.
