CERAMICS WORKSHOP WEEKS 2 + 3: Salt and Wood Firing
Join us for this summer's workshop to explore form, function, aesthetic values, textures,
tactile qualities, and surface development of atmospheric firing through salt and wood. Works will be made from start to finish during the workshop. Participants develop a contemporary and historic understanding of the unique qualities and processes of salt- and wood-firing and learn to work with the ancient processes of the Anagama kiln. The resulting colors and textures are totally unique to the process and to each fire.
Nurture and grow your personal aesthetic. Step outside the ordinary and live in the extraordinary in this two-week experience of creating clay works, decorating, and firing with salt and wood on the Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute and PrattMWP College of Art & Design campus in Central New York.

CLAY: Participants will be provided with up to 50lbs of clay body of their choice (porcelain, T3 or Z stoneware, and access to studio clay body) during the workshop. Any additional clay is available for purchase. All cone 10 clay bodies, glazes, and slips used in salt and wood firing are excellent for both Salt kiln and the Anagama.
SURFACE: A variety of slips and oxides are provided and will greatly enhance the firing process. Glazing should be limited to the inside of vessels since the outside surface of the vessels need to interact with the salt and the ash.
TIMING: Workshop will begin on Monday, June 13 at 8 a.m. in the Ceramics Studios. The workshop will end early afternoon on Sunday, June 26 to allow for participants to travel home.

ON-CAMPUS HOUSING: Optional on-campus housing is available. Please review costs, policies, what is and is not included on the housing pages. Single bedrooms, shared bathroom and common area within a suite are available for a flat fee.
OFF-CAMPUS HOUSING: Other housing options include local campsites, AirBnB rentals, and local bed & breakfast establishments. Transportation during the workshop is the responsibility of the participant.

MEALS: Water and some snacks are provided in the studios however generally food is not covered by workshop or housing tuition. Please plan and budget accordingly for your meals. If you purchase on-campus housing, you will have access to a kitchenette with prep areas, refrigerator, and sink however no oven or stove. Please see specifics for housing in What to Bring & What Not To. A charcoal grill is available outside of the ceramics studios for individual or group use.
TUITION: Full payment is required to complete registration. Spots may not be reserved without payment. Fees cover all basic materials, clay, and glaze. Tuition does not include food though some studio breakfasts, snacks, and beverages are provided. On-campus housing is available for an additional fee.
Apply to be a Workshop Assistant: Attendees may apply to be a Ceramics Workshop Assistant (WA) during this workshop. Workshop Assistants are awarded financial aid to cover a portion of the workshop and housing costs. Total funds available vary. Final scholarship amount will be confirmed upon selection. The Workshop Assistant (WA) is a paraprofessional member of the Residence Life Office and Ceramics Staff. The WA may be directly responsible for implementing policies as trained by student life, campus safety, and ceramics workshop instructors in addition to workshop participation.

WORKSHOP REFUND + CANCELLATION POLICY: Full refunds for cancellation will be made up to 30 days prior to the first day of the workshop (Friday, May 13, 2022). Cancellations must be received on a business weekday. Under 30 days, housing will be fully refunded but no workshop tuition refund will be granted unless it is a medical emergency accompanied by a doctor's note. If unforeseen circumstances or under enrollment cause MWPAI to cancel the workshop, registrants will receive a full refund for tuition and housing. MWPAI is not responsible for travel or other reservations upon cancellation.
PROOF OF VACCINATION: Registering for the 2022 Ceramics Workshops requires all participants and staff to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19. Participants must provide proof of receiving either vaccine at least 10 days prior to arrival on campus for residence hall move-in or first day of workshop programming. All policies and procedures are subject to change before and during the program. Any new or updated policies and procedures will be communicated via email to all registered parties.
ABOUT THE CERAMICS STUDIO: The MWPAI pottery studio encompasses 3,500 square feet of the historic carriage house Ceramics and Sculpture Studio Building. It is the best equipped ceramics facility in the area. Assets include over a dozen electric wheels, a slab roller, extruder, mixers, electric kilns, and a Bailey Car kiln. The kiln shed is equipped with large salt kilns, downdraft kiln, and an anagama kiln. The shed is the hub for workshops and for learning the fundamentals of salt and wood firing. The second floor is home to the Sunithi S. Bajekal Small Works Gallery and the Vincent R. Clemente Ceramic Resource Room, a library of 250 ceramic books, magazines, and DVD demos for research and inspiration.
